NOTES: Stowe School was created in 1923 as an independent public school for boys and occupies the great house and grounds of Stowe. The house, designed by Robert Adam and completed in 1774, was modified to accommodate staff and boys by Clough Williams-Ellis. This is one of several additions to the school.

NOTES: In the nineteenth century Maws & Company was the biggest manufacturer of decorative tiles in the world. The demand for its products declined dramatically in the twentieth century and the factory closed in 1970. Two thirds of its factory buildings were demolished between 1974 and 1977. The remaining buildings were either renovated and converted into flats, or restored to form part of the Maws Craft Centre, established in 1988.
