Thames Tunnel, London: longitudinal and transverse sections, view of tunnelling shield and topographical plan

RIBA68967
Brunel, Isambard Kingdom (1806-1859)
NOTES: Although construction began in 1825, the tunnel did not open until 1843. It was originally planned for horse-drawn traffic, but by the time the tunnel opened there was not enough money remaining to build adequate approach roads so it was used for foot traffic only and became a tourist attraction. It was purchased in 1865 and became part of London's railway network.
