NOTES: This was one of the first steel-framed buildings in San Francisco and it survived both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes unscathed. The Ferry Building and the central waterfront were restored after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 irreparably damaged the Embarcadero Freeway which had been built across the face of the Ferry Building. It re-opened in 2003 both as a ferry terminus and shopping centre.

NOTES: This building contains the ventilation tower and control station for Queensway Tunnel under the River Mersey connecting Liverpool and Birkenhead. It was shattered internally by a land mine and part of the structure was destroyed by bombing during World War II. Since no fire occurred, it was possible to reconstruct the building to its original pre-war design by Herbert J. Rowse.

NOTES: The Blackwall Tunnel is a pair of road tunnels under the River Thames linking the East End at Blackwall, Poplar, with the Greenwich peninsula. The distinctive ventilation towers for the second eastern tunnel, which opened in 1967, were designed by Terry Farrell in 1961-1962 while he was working as an architect for the London County Council.
