Girton College, Cambridge: room with tapestry by Lady Julia Carew

NOTES: Girton College was begun in 1873 and added to in 1886, 1900 and 1932. The tapestry is a series of crewel work panels designed at the Royal School of Needlework for Lady Julia Carew and stitched by her between 1900-1918. They were installed in the college in 1922.

NOTES: The original house was built by Henry Clutton in 1863. It was rebuilt by Clutton in 1875-1879 after fire damage in 1873. It was bought by Lord Melchett in 1911and further re-modelled in 1912-1914 by Darcy Braddell.

NOTES: The tapestry was created for number 1 Holland Park, the home of Alexander Constantine Ionides, the art patron and collector, and was made by Morris & Co. on the Merton Abbey looms. The tapestry itself is now in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
