The annotation at the foot of this drawing reads 'from a sketch by 'D. A.' (probably Thomas Dinham Atkinson). The sketches on this page appear to be after originals by other artists.

NOTES: George Gilbert Scott Jr sent this full-scale design to his close friend and fellow architect George Bodley. Both Scott and Bodley shared an interest in reviving the Medieval technique of painting church walls with patterns imitating those found on luxury textiles.

NOTES: These designs feature 'pounced' (punched) holes along the outlines of the motifs to facilitate the transfer of the pattern onto a surface such as a wall. These designs strongly resemble the painted wall decorations in Melbury House and were probably intended for this purpose.
