Swimming pools

NOTES: Ibstone House was originally a late 18th century villa with alterations including a service wing to left of c.1830-1840 . It was refurbished in the 1980s, possibly by Bird & Tyler. It was also the home of Dame Rebecca West (1892-1983) who lived there from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. See RIBA119205 for a black and white version of this image.

NOTES: The winning schemes for this competition were announced in July 1906 and this submisson did not appear amongst the winners. The complex was built to the designs of Dixon & Potter (1907-1908).

The Baths also provided cold water baths, vapour baths, medicinal douche baths, reading room, billiard room and barber shop. In the early 1860s Brill had opened next door on East Street a Swimming Bath for Ladies also using heated sea water. BrillÔÇÖs Baths were demolished in 1929 to be replaced by a cinema.
