Water towers, Crystal Palace, Sydenham, London

RIBA15795
Brunel, Isambard Kingdom (1806-1859)
NOTES: Brunel's water towers were built to feed Joseph Paxton's new fountains on the Italian terraces in front of the Crystal Palace, Sydenham. They were demolished during World War II so as not to provide a landmark to bomber aircraft. This photograph comes from the archive of Sir Anthony Wakefield Cox (1915-1993).

Palacio de Liria, Madrid: detail of the entrance facade

RIBA15923
Rodriguez Tizon, Ventura (1717-1785)
NOTES: This palace was built for the 3rd Duke of Berwick and Liria, James Stuart Fitz-James, to designs by Ventura Rodriguez. The palace was almost completely destroyed by a bombing raid in 1936. Its faithful reconstruction, which lasted twenty years and involved Sir Edwin Lutyens (for interior rebuilding, circa 1950-1955), commenced once the Civil War was over.
