NOTES: The original Benedictine monastery founded on this site in c. 657 fell to Viking attack in 867 and was abandoned. It was re-founded in 1087 and a new abbey was built during the 13th and 14th centuries. It was dissolved in 1540 and abandoned.

Temple of Olympian Zeus, Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion), Athens

NOTES: The Temple of Olympian Zeus dates from the 6th century BC with further work no later than the 4th century BC. In 174BC work was restarted using a Roman architect who substituted the Corinthian order for the columns. The temple was finally completed by the emperor Hadrian who dedicated it in 130AD.

Burgie Castle, Forres, Moray: two perspectives of the remaining six-storey tower

NOTES: This large-scale Z-plan fortified house was built for Robert Dunbar in c.1602. The majority of the castle, apart from the tower and fragment of the main block, was demolished in 1802 and its building materials re-used elsewhere.
