NOTES: In addition to being a landscape and architectural painter, lithographer and archaeologist, Bouet was also appointed Inspecteur de la Societe Francaise d'Archeologie. This drawing is one of a number of topographical studies and details of French, German, Italian and Swiss medieval architecture executed by him between around 1850 and 1865.
NOTES; These gardens were created by Colonel Leonard Messel, who purchased the 600 acre estate with Regency house in 1890, and his head gardener, James Comber, who tended the gardens from 1895-1953. Nymans, famous for its beauty and collection of rare plants, was bequeatherd into the care of the National Trust in 1953.
NOTES: Margaret Traherne (1919-2006), the artist and designer, and her husband commissioned this modernist artists' house on land adjoining Ham Common in 1953.
