NOTES: This three-nave brick church replaced an earlier Romanesque church destroyed by the great fire of 1276 and was completed by 1300. This organ was destroyed during the Allied bombing raid on 28-29 March 1942 in which a fifth of the city was destroyed.
NOTES: Construction on the Marienkirche began in c.1200 and took over 150 years to complete. It was completely burnt down in the Allied bombing raid on 28-29 March 1942 in which a fifth of the city was destroyed. Nevertheless, it was thoroughly restored by 1959 under the supervision of B. Fendrich. This organ was built in 1516-1518, but enhanced and elaborated upon throughout the centuries, notably by Friedrich Stellwagen in 1637-1641. The organ, along with the Baroque church fittings, was lost during the aforesaid bombing raid.
NOTES: This drawing originates from a volume containing topographical sketches of castles and country houses executed in a number of different hands from the office of Anthony Salvin. Anthony Salvin Junior carried out restoration work on All Saints' Church between 1852-1853, but this watercolour appears to predate that work as the gallery and church furniture seen here were removed.
