NOTES: The architect and builder James Burton began developing the resort of St Leonards on Sea in 1828 on land he owned. Victoria House at 57 Marina (number 2 on the print) was the first building put up and served as Burton's residence until he completed Allegria (number 7), overlooking what is now St Leonards Gardens. His son, Decimus, continued the development of the new town after his father's death in 1837.

Following his death his son, the architect Decimus Burton, continued the development. This print was prepared as one of the lithographs in the work Views at St. Leonards, near Hastings : first stone laid March 1st 1828 (St Leonards, 183-?). Some of the prints in that work are dated 1829 but thework was probably published in the early 1830s. Two of these buildings can be identified on a keyed view of St Leonards on Sea, see RIBA85138.
