NOTES: Basildon, created from the conglomeration of four small villages, namely Pitsea, Laindon, Basildon and Vange, was designated a new town in 1948, together with the other London orbital developments of Stevenage, Harlow, Hemel Hempstead and Bracknell. The development of the New Towns, built after World War II to ease overcrowding in London, was overseen by Lewis Silkin, 1st Baron Silkin (1888-1972), the Minister for Town and Country Planning from 1945 to 1950.
NOTES: Parker was involved in the design of the new town of Pacaembu, S+â-úo Paulo, from 1917 to 1920 and it is likely that the design for the Jardin America relates to this scheme.
NOTES: Lutyens was commissioned to lay out this seaside garden village in 1901 by a surveyor, T.B. Lumb. The scheme was to provide a number of plots on which people could build small holiday homes under the control of a consulting architect, while sharing communal gardens, a hotel and church etc. The plan was never executed.
