NOTES: The shop was destroyed by a bomb during World War II. This image was included in the book 'Smaller Retail Shops' by Bryan and Norman Westwood (London: Architectural Press, 1937). It appeared in the publication on p.72.
NOTES: The distinctive columns on the entrance facade were removed in the 1960s. It was taken over by an independent distributor in 1981 and renamed Ace. It closed in 1983 and was demolished c.1985 to make way for an office development.
NOTES: Simpson's was the first shop in Britain to have an uninterrupted curved-glass frontage. The construction is of welded steel, made possible by arc-welding, supporting panel walls of brickwork.
