NOTES: The church, which is the cathedral of Rome, was rebuilt by Borromini in 1646-1649. The principal or east front was added by Galilei in 1734-1736.

NOTES: This unexecuted design is said to commemorate the Treaty of Versailles of 1783.

NOTES: The statue of Eros was designed by Sir Arthur Gilbert and erected in 1893. Elizabeth ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952 and was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

NOTES: It is likely this drawing dates from between 1751 and 1754, during Stuart's extensive travels in Greece.This image also appeared as an engraving in Stuart & Revett's 'The Antiquities of Athens' (London, 1794), vol. III, ch. iii, pl. I.
