Nemrut Dagi (Mount Nemrut): one of the many scattered heads of statues

NOTES: This mountain shrine, located near Adiyaman in south-east Turkey, is thought to be the burial tumulus and Hierotheseion (Holy Seat) of the king of Commagene, Antiochus I Epiphanes (ruled 70 BC - 38 BC), who created his own cult in a Hellenized form of Zoroastrianism.

NOTES: This small cruciform brick chapel was reputedly commissioned to house the tomb of Galla Placidia, daughter of Emperor Theodosius I (379-395), and half-sister of Honorius (393-423), the last Emperor of Rome. She died in Rome in 450 and it is unlikely that she was ever buried here. Modern scholars suggest that she commissioned it as an oratory.
