NOTES: The original church on this site was founded by St Wilfrid of York and built in 674-678 as part of a Benedictine monastery. Like many Saxon churches in the area, it was constructed from stones taken from Hadrian's Wall. This Augustinian priory, also known as the Abbey of St Andrew's, was built over the crypt of the original church between 1180 and 1250. The abbey was dissolved in 1537 and thereafter served as a parish church.
