NOTES: This manor was built in French-Renaissance style by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874-1880 to display his collection of art treasures and as a place to entertain his fashionable and influential friends. Designed by Gabriel Hippolyte Destailleur, it is the last complete example of 'le style Rothschild' outside Frankfurt.

NOTES: Sanssouci was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, built in 1745-1747 to designs by the Prussian aristocrat and architect, Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdoff. The creation of the Park, organised around several buildings, began soon after the completion of the palace.

NOTES: Henry Hoare II, a banker who had been on the Grand Tour, inherited Stourhead in 1741and was largely responsible for the design of the gardens. He employed Henry Flitcroft to design many of the garden buildings in the 1740s. The River Stour was dammed to form the great lake and was completed in 1757. The Pantheon, also designed by Henry Flitcroft, was built in 1756.
