Arnolfo di Cambio (c. 1240-c. 1302)
NOTES: The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo, was begun in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio and completed in 1436 by Filippo Brunelleschi with the addition of the famous dome. Palazzo Pitti was begun 1458 by Luca Fancelli with considerable additions being made by Giorgio Vasari in the 1560s.

Michelozzo di Bartolomeo (1396-1472)
NOTES: This, the most important medieval building in the city, was built as the residence of the Priori delle Arti and the Gonfalioniere in 1299-1310. From 1540 onwards it became the ducal residence of Cosimo I de' Medici and his family and necessary further changes and enlargements were undertaken by G. B. Tasso and Giorgio Vasari. The 'first courtyard' was designed in 1453 by Michelozzo. The original sculpture on the fountain was by Verrocchio (1476) and the porphyry fountain itself by del Tadda. Vasari executed the wall frescos in 1565.

NOTES: This photograph was taken between 1865 and 1890. Construction on the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano began in 1506 under Donato Bramante. Work continued under the direction of leading architects of the time and the body of the church was completed by 1626. Piazza San Pietro is partly enclosed by two semi-circular colonnades, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1656-1667.
