RIBA82817
Wightwick, George (1802-1872)
NOTES: This design is one of a number of drawings bound into five volumes entitled 'Architectural works of George Wightwick', made between 1832 and 1850. Wightwick instructed his articled pupils to make this detailed set of retrospective drawings to illustrate every building of importance he had designed. Designs for Christ Church, North Brentor, Devon (not as executed): plan, elevations of font and windows, transverse section looking east and details

RIBA83249
Wightwick, George (1802-1872)
NOTES: Designs for a new church in Lamerton parish were produced by Wightwick between 1844 and 1850 when they were rejected by the diocese. New plans were prepared by Wightwick and the church was finally built (1856-1857). The church as built does not correspond to these drawings so it appears these are for the rejected scheme. This design is one of a number of drawings bound into five volumes entitled 'Architectural works of George Wightwick', made between 1832 and 1850. Wightwick instructed his articled pupils to make this detailed set of retrospective drawings to illustrate every building of importance he had designed. The drawings were intended to serve both as a record of Wightwick's completed buildings and as a method of conveying to his students the design process from initial working design to finished structure.

Drawings from a sketchbook showing alternative designs for font, St Mildred's Church, Whippingham, Isle of Wight: elevations

RIBA83417
Nash, John (1752-1835)
NOTES: The centre design for the font was used. Nash altered the old church, including adding a tower and a schoolroom. The church was largely rebuilt in the 1850s and 1860s. This drawing is in a sketchbook compiled by Repton (1798 to circa 1805) while working in the office of John Nash.

St John the Baptist (Old Church), Margate, Kent: details of the font

RIBA83552
NOTES: This drawing comes from a sketchbook recording visits to east Kent between 1829 and 1837. In the Georgian period, when visitors began coming to Margate as a fashionable resort, the dilapidated Norman church of St John the Baptist was developed with galleries, box pews and a triple-decker pulpit. Much of this was swept away with the restoration of 1872-1875 by Ewan Christian.

Cathedral, Pienza: the crypt chapel

RIBA91849
Rossellino, Bernardo (1409-1464)
NOTES: The font is by Rossellini and is made of travertine.
