NOTES: This drawing was made in preparation for publication in Newton's 'The Architecture of M. Vitruvius Pollio', (London, 1771; 2nd edition, 1791), in which Vitruvian principles were applied to conjectural reconstructions of Classical buildings and later constructions.
NOTES: Lansdown Tower was built on a strip of land leading up to William Beckford's house in Bath. See RIBA66785 for the lithograph based on this drawing.
NOTES: The Monopteros in Munich's 'English Garden' park is a small, polychrome Greek-style monopteral ornamental temple structure. The park itself was founded in 1789 by Benjamin Thompson, who is also known as Count Rumford.
