Audley End, Essex: Jacobean screen in the hall

NOTES: Occupying the site of the 12th century Walden Abbey, granted to Sir Thomas Audley in 1538, this is the largest of the Jacobean 'prodigy' houses. It was built by Thomas, Earl of Suffolk and King James I's Lord Chamberlain from c.1605 to c.1614.

NOTES: Hatfield House, commissioned by the Lord Treasurer, Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, was designed by Simon Basil, who was Surveyor of the King's Works from 1606 until his death in 1615. The construction of the house was supervised by the surveyor, Robert Lemyinge (or Liminge), from 1607 to 1612.

Hotel, Portmeirion: the library door

NOTES: The building, originally a Victorian villa, was enlarged and converted into a hotel in 1926. The 19th century library was severely damaged during a fire in 1981 but restored to its former state a few years later.
