NOTES: The original theatre by John and Benjamin Green dates from 1836-1837. It was gutted by fire in 1901 and was given a new interior by Frank Matcham. In 1986 the theatre closed for a major restorating programme, carried out by Renton Howard Wood Levine Levin Partnership, which included the remodelling of the balconies and insertion of a new staircase. It re-opened in 1988. See RIBA132880 for a colour version of this image.

NOTES: It is commonly known as Kappele or Little Chapel; the Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of St Mary is its formal title. It was built from 1748-1750 by Balthasar Neumann, but the interior was not fully finished until 1821. The interior features ceiling frescos by Matthaus Gunther from 1752 and 1781 and stucco work (1747-1750) by Johann Michael Feuchtmayer the Younger. The side altars date to 1768 and the neoclassical high altar was made in 1799.

Trinity Hall Chapel, Cambridge: the ceiling decorated with coats of arms

NOTES: The chapel, originally dates from 1366, although only consecrated in 1513. It was modernised in 1729-1730, and much of the plaster decoration dates from this period.
