NOTES: The chapel was commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute, but after his death in 1900 work on its decoration continued under the patronage of his son, the 4th Marquess.
NOTES: This image is from a volume of drawings (entitled Vol II) by various designers produced for or presented to the Quarto Imperial Club, London, between 1892 and 1897.
NOTES: These designs feature 'pounced' (punched) holes along the outlines of the motifs to facilitate the transfer of the pattern onto a surface such as a wall. These designs strongly resemble the painted wall decorations in Melbury House and were probably intended for this purpose.
NOTES: The lettering on the poster states that the artist and illustrator Walter Crane would be present to address the students at the exhibition's opening.
