Colliery buildings

NOTES: This is an example of the many industrial hostels built throughout the country from 1941 by the Ministry of Supply and the Ministry of Works and Building.

NOTES: Cecil George Kemp was Chief Architect of the Miners' Welfare Commission and Chief Architect of the National Coal Board from 1926 to1949. The colliery closed in 1986 and the shafts capped.

NOTES: Rothes was an experimental colliery for which Glenrothes, Scotland's second New Town, was created in 1948 to provide housing for the coal miners and their families. The pit closed in 1961 because of unstemmable flooding problems and a decline in coal requirements nationwide.
