NOTES: Vicar's Close originated in the 14th century and is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited street in Europe. Its terraced houses were built to house the Cathedral's choir members.

NOTES: Dom Hans van der Laan, Benedictine monk and architect, was commissioned in 1956 to complete the construction work on the abbey that had begun in 1927. The adding of the church, the library, a sacristy and an open arcade around a new cloister took until 1986 to complete. The church, together with its annexes, was completed in 1967.

It served as a scathing indictment of the perceived irresponsibility of landlords and senior members of the government and church in allowing valuable old buildings to be destroyed in the interest of short-term financial gain.
