NOTES: This drawing is numbered VII/7 in the Burlington-Devonshire Collection. This drawing formed part of Lord Burlington's sequence of Palladio drawings. Some publications have attributed this drawing to Giovanni Antonio Dosio, Italian architect and sculptor.
NOTES: This drawing is from an album of measured and topographical drawings of buildings in Germany, Italy, Greece and Egypt entitled 'Architectural Sketches' made by George Vulliamy on his travels. This monumental city gate replaced the original in 1583-1584. It was destroyed in 1667 by a fire and was rebuilt by Gaspare Guercio, completed in 1669.
NOTES: The construction of the city walls was begun in 1674 under the direction of Captain General Don Francisco Orejon y Gaston and took over a century to build. See RIBA155420 for a colour version of this image.
