Salisbury Cathedral: the spire seen from the north-west

NOTES: The cathedral was built between 1220 and 1258. The chapter house was built between 1263 and 1284. The tower and the spire were completed by c.1330.

York Minster: the west front

NOTES: The rebuilding of the Minster in Gothic styles began between 1230 and c.1241 with the southern wing of the transept, built by Archbishop de Gray. Work on the west front in Decorated style began in 1291 and was completed up to the roof of the nave in 1338. The south tower was built in 1433-1477, and the north tower in 1470-1477. The Great West Window, known locally as the 'Heart of Yorkshire', was painted by Master Richard Ketelbarn between 1338 and 1339.

Lincoln Cathedral: the nave

NOTES: The building of the cathedral comprised three main periods; from 1072-1092; 1191 to c. 1250; and 1256 to c. 1300, with some alterations and additions to the towers in the 14th and 15th centuries. The nave is largely 13th century.

Chartres Cathedral: the north rose window

NOTES: Dedicated in 1260, this cathedral is an exemplar of the French High Gothic style. The north rose and its five lancet windows were a gift from Queen Blanche of Castille in 1230.

NOTES: The church, which is the cathedral of Rome, was rebuilt by Borromini in 1646-1649. The principal or east front was added by Galilei in 1734-1736.

NOTES: The cathedral was built between 1089 and 1499. It was extensively restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1873 and 1890, and in 1897. This is the 11th century nave.

NOTES: The building of the cathedral comprised three main periods; from 1072-1092; 1191 to c. 1250; and 1256 to c. 1300, with some alterations and additions to the towers in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Angel Choir was built between 1256 and 1280 to extend the existing building.

NOTES: The Cathedral, the largest Romanesque church in Italy, was built between 1063 and 1118. Construction on the detached bell tower began in 1173 under the direction of Diotisalvi. The tower began to sink and lean after completion of the third storey in 1178. Building resumed in1272 under Giovanni di Simone, architect of the Campo Santo, but was interrupted again in 1284 on reaching the seventh storey, owing to further leaning. The belfry was added by Tommano Simone in 1350.
