NOTES: Tilden produced a number of designs for the redevelopment of the whole promontory of Hengistbury Head, Dorset, for H. Gordon Selfridge. The scheme included a grandiose castle with an additional smaller castle surrounded by ramparts, but was never built.

NOTES: The Alcazar of Toledo is a castle located in the highest part of the city. Once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century, it was restored under Charles I (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) and his son Philip II of Spain in the 1540s. Most of the castle was rebuilt or restored, between 1939 and 1957 after seige of the castle in the Spanish Civil War.

NOTES: Originally 14th century Naworth was gutted by fire in 1844 and was rebuilt by Salvin in 1844. Webb added a clock face in a gable overlooking the courtyard as seen here in 1879. See RIBA158153 for a colour version of this image.
