NOTES: The drawing must date from after 1852, the year that the estate was purchased by Colonel William Petrie Waugh, but before 1858, when he was declared bankrupt and the creditors foreclosed. Nothing is known of Philip Brown except that he was a Southampton architect. Only part of the improvements proposed here were carried out.
NOTES: Built by Richard Payne Knight, virtuoso, archaeologist and anthropologist, c.1772-1778, this house is one of the earliest contrived castellated castles. Knight was assisted in the early stages of building by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard.
