NOTES: The competition for the construction of this new terminus to replace the old central station (1864) was won in 1912 by architect Ulisse Stacchini. Construction proceeded very slowly after World War I and the project kept changing and becoming more complex. Mussolini, on becoming Prime Minister, wanted the station to represent the power of the Fascist regime, hence its monumental proportions. The station was inaugurated in 1931.

NOTES: Dom Hans van der Laan, Benedictine monk and architect, was commissioned in 1956 to complete the construction work on the abbey that had begun in 1927. The adding of the church, the library, a sacristy and an open arcade around a new cloister took until 1986 to complete.
NOTES: Palazzo Grassi was built between 1748 and 1772 and its design is attributed to Giorgio Massari. It was purchased by the Fiat group in 1983 and was restored and transformed into an exhibition space by Gae Aulenti in association with Antonio Foscari. It was further renovated in 2005 by Tadao Ando when it was bought by the entrepreneur Francois Pinnault. This exhibition, designed by Francesco Venezia, brought together over 700 Etruscan items from around the world and extended throughout all 36 galleries of the Venetian palazzo.
