Studies for an allegorical ceiling painting relating to the City of London: design for a central oval with the corner figures labelled as 'Fortitude', 'Justice', 'Temperance', and 'Prudence'

RIBA125848
Thornhill, Sir James (1675-1734)
NOTES: The set of drawings depict two different preliminary and final studies for an oval ceiling compartment (four in total), one pair with additional putti representing Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice. Their postioning suggests that this was for a ceiling of standard Palladio/Jones type with an oval central compartment with square compartments at each end of a type found in both town and country mansions. One has a scale that indicates the oval panel was to be 10 feet long so it is more likely that it was intended for a town rather than a country house.

Studies for allegorical ceiling paintings: representations of four continents in trope l'oeil niches, Europe, Asia, Africa, America

RIBA125850
Thornhill, Sir James (1675-1734)
NOTES: This group consists of preliminary and final, annotated versions of the four Continents, intended probably for the corners of a larger scheme described on the verso of PB971/2(ii) as 'for ye centre, a Model of Prince George & Queen Anne representing Conjugal Love'. These appear to be studies for the ceiling of the Painted Hall, Greenwich.
