NOTES: This Royal Palace is one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860). It was erected in 1602 under the direction of Domenico Fontana, although it underwent numerous additions and changes, including some by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th century.

Vita Sackville-West's writing desk, Sissinghurst Castle

Sackville-West, Vita (Victoria Mary) (1892-1962)
NOTES: This Elizabethan manor house, based on a double courtyard, with a central red-brick tower, was built by Sir Richard Baker in 1560-1570. It was saved from dereliction when Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson bought Sissinghurst, which included 400 acres of farmland, in 1930.

NOTES: The ceiling of this room, formerly the Sala dell' Albergo of the Scuola della Carita, dates from the 15th century. The 'Presentation' was painted between 1534 and 1539.

Chichester Cathedral: relief of Christ at the House of Mary and Martha

NOTES: Founded as a cathedral in 1075, the building was completed in 1108. Much of the Norman stonework, arcading and the timber-roofed nave were destroyed by fire in 1187 and were rebuilt and extended in Early English style in the 13th century.

NOTES: The ceiling of the room, designed by Antonio da Ponte, is by Cristoforo Sorte and dates from 1581. The painting in the centre of the image is by Tintoretto.
