NOTES: This drawing is numbered X/17 verso in the Burlington-Devonshire Collection. The Amphiteatrum Castrensis was located near to the Castra Praetoria, the great camp of the Praetorian Guard, built by Emperor Tiberius in 23 AD. The amphitheatre was probably built at the same time in order to provide entertainment for the soldiers.
NOTES: This drawing formed part of Lord Burlington's sequence of Palladio drawings. The College of Physicians stood at Amen Corner in Westminster until the Great Fire of London in 1666 and became known as the Royal College of Physicians in 1674.
NOTES: The site of the Institute, located within the Jawaharlal Nehru University in south Delhi, comprises housing in the form of apartments for senior and junior staff and a 25-room hostel for research scholars. The housing which was the first phase of the building of the Institute was begun in 1983.
