NOTES: This engraving was prepared for Frederick Charles Terry, Landscape scenery illustrating Sydney (Sydney: Sands & Kenny, 1855), pl. 21. The original building for the Anglican church was erected on this site in 1803 and is the oldest continuous Christian place of worship in Australia. The twin towers (said to be based on towers at Reculver, Kent) were added to the church in 1818 (architect Lt John Watts). In the early 1850s, the church having become very dilapidated, all but the towers was demolished and rebuilding begun to the designs of James Houison, with the formal reopening in 1855. The building was further enlarged in the 1880s.
