St James's Cemetery, Liverpool: perspective from the south

NOTES: The cemetery was laid out by Foster within the former quarry from which stone for the docks and 18th century buildings had been removed.

NOTES: The first Corn Exchange on this site was opened in 1808 (designed by John Foster Snr). A building by Picton replaced it in 1851. This print must have been produced before the building was completed as the inscription in the entablature has an incomplete date after 'rebuilt and enlarged'. Just visible at the end of Brunswick Street is Cockerell's Bank of England building.

NOTES: Built in 1716-1718 as a residential charity school for poor children, this is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool. It has been suggested that it was designed by Thomas Ripley, architect of the Liverpool Custom House, or Thomas Steers, the dock engineer, but there is no conclusive evidence that either was involved. The school relocated to new premises in 1906 and the building became home to a group of artists and sculptors in 1907 and has served as an art space ever since. The Bluecoat Gallery was formally established in 1968.

NOTES: Built in 1869, these 88 flats contained in four blocks were one of the first local authority housing schemes in England. They were part demolished and converted into self-contained units in 1954 by the city architect Dr Ronald Bradbury. The block on the right is scheduled for demolition. The flats were subsequently demolished in 1977.
