NOTES: This is one of two prinicpal gateways from Tombland into the cathedral close. The original gateway was practically destroyed by fire during a riot of 1272 but enough of the original remained for it to be rebuilt in highly decorated style in 1316. Tthe uppermost part of the gateway is a Victorian addition.
