NOTES: Construction on the abbey church began in 1077 and continued until the completion of the Lady Chapel in 1320. This church and the medieval gatehouse were the only monastic buildings of the Benedictine abbey to survive the dissolution in 1539. It was elevated to cathedral status in 1877. The church was extensively restored under Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1856-1877. The fronts were rebuilt and restoration completed by Edmund Beckett Denison, later Lord Grimthorpe, in 1880-1885.
