Devey, George (1820-1886)
NOTES: Alterations to Melbury House, which dated from the mid-sixteenth century, were carried out by Devey for Henry Edward Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester. The house had already been remodelled in the late seventeenth century, and in 1872 by Anthony Salvin. Devey's additions, in Tudor style to match the original building, doubled the size of the house. He built a new range for the offices terminating in a square tower with an octagonal stair turret at one of the corners. He also added a new gateway to the kitchen courtyard and designed a little dairy which was not built.
