NOTES: This drawing is by an unidentified draughtsman after an engraved plate in Milner's History and survey of the antiquities of Winchester (Winchester, 1798), vol. I, p. 431. Also known as Winchester Palace, Wren's proposed royal palace for Charles II stood on a site adjacent to Winchester Castle and was in part modelled after the Palace of Versailles. Charles died in 1685 before the project's completion and the building was later converted into an army barracks.
