NOTES: The poet and critic Richard Church and his wife, Katherina, arranged papers for Frederick Lucas Marcus and his wife, the commercial artist and illustrator Helen Riehm, on their arrival from Paris shortly after the outbreak of World War II. In return for their assistance and hospitality, Marcus designed the conversion of the Churchs' recently acquired oast house at Curtisden Green in Kent.
