NOTES: The National Gallery was designed by William Wilkins and completed in 1838 while Sir Charles Barry was the architect of the square, completed in 1845. A new layout of the square was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939 for the Ministry of Works, but was only completed in 1948.
