Measured drawing of the Rhodes Memorial, Rondebosch, Cape Town: plan and elevation with sketches
|Architect/Designer||Baker, Sir Herbert (1862-1946)|
|View||Plan | Exterior|
|Library Reference||Baker VI/C|
|Subject||Statues ; Monuments|
NOTES: The memorial was built on a steep site on the side of the Table Mountains and the design was inspired by the Altar of Zeus at Pergamos. Large platforms at different levels, linked by flights of steps and flanked by statues of lions by John M. Swan, led to a 'temple', U-shaped in plan and open on one side, which housed a bust of Rhodes, also by Swan.
