NOTES: The house was built between 1663-1665, architect Sir Roger Pratt. It was altered during the 18th century by Matthew Brettingham, but this was swept away, with Charles Barry's alterations on 1835, which included encasing the entire house in Chilmark stone, raising the attic storey, adding a cupola, tall chimneystacks at the corners and a new porte cochere on the north front at basement level. The interior was also altered and modern amenities installed. See RIBA149893 for a black and white version of this image.
