NOTES: Hadlow Castle had been built c. 1790 for Walter Barton May to designs said to be by a J. Dugdale Esq, possibly an amateur. The tower, constructed between 1838-1840, was modelled on Beckford's tower at Fonthill. This lithograph appeared in C. Greenwood, Epitome of the history of Kent (1838).
