NOTES: Construction on this cathedral began in 1093 at the eastern end in Romanesque style. The building dates almost entirely from the 12th century and is widely regarded as the finest example of Norman architecture in Europe. The great tower dates from the 13th century and was altered in 1430-1437 after being struck by lightning. A new crossing tower was begun c.1465. It was built in Gothic style in two stages, the upper part executed c.1483-1490.
