NOTES: Dollond & Aitchison, prior to becoming one of Britain's biggest firms of opticians, sold photographic and optical equipment. One of the original founders, John Dollond (b.1706), established an optical workshop in Vine Street, Spitalfields, London. In the 1750s he invented the famed achromatic lens, made of flint and crown glass and used in telescopes, for which he was awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal.
