NOTES: Lutyens first met the Duke of Penaranda in 1915 and his first designs for the palace of El Guadalperal, which was never built, were published in 1917. Preliminary works began in 1918 but were soon abandoned as the site was revealed to be that of a pre-historic dolmen. The site for the house was moved and ancillary buildings were constructed before the final designs for the ÔÇÿNew PalaceÔÇÖ were finished in 1927 and 1928. Quarrying for the stone began and foundations were dug beginning in 1930 but work was very intermittent and stopped in 1932, never to be continued. This design seems to relate to the conversion and enlargement of ancillary buildings to accommodate the Duke while the ÔÇÿNew PalaceÔÇÖ was under construction.
