Design for a royal marine palace, Brighton: perspective

NOTES: This lithograph was dedicated to Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (knighted in 1841) and drawn on stone by William Gauci after the design by Mocatta. The two buildings nearest the sea in the foreground of the lithograph were the only parts completed at the time of Adelaide Crescent designed by Decimus Burton for Goldsmid. This palatial design probably dates after 1833 because the site on which the palace appears includes the site of the Anthaeum, a huge glazed dome to cover a tropical garden with exotic shrubs, flowers, birds and fish. This was constructed between 1832-1833 and collapsed the day before it was to open in 1833, the debris lying where it fell for many years. The construction of Adelaide Crescent, which had stopped, resumed in 1850 to altered designs and was finished in 1860.
