NOTES: Located on the northern edge of the foret de Boulogne, this chateau is the largest in the Loire valley. It was built between 1519 and 1547 as a hunting lodge for Francois I. The original design is attributed to Domenico da Cortona. Pierre Nepveu of Amboise was master mason until 1537, after which the construction was supervised by Jacques Coqueau of Blois.
